Have you ever been asked in an interview how a system like Google Docs or Kafka works on the inside?

This course is the next step after System Design for Interviews, for engineers who know the basics and want to understand how large systems are built in production.

The course has three parts. The first part covers concepts, like networks, databases for heavy writes and for locations, transaction isolation, replication and migrations, consensus with Paxos, security and observability. And the first four videos, on networks, are free.

The second part uses these concepts to design systems, like Google Docs, Google Maps, a chess website, WhatsApp calling, a recommendation engine, Netflix movie onboarding and an audio search engine like Shazam. Most designs come with quizzes and an exercise, where you complete the design yourself.

The third part reads the research papers behind production systems, like Memcached and TAO at Facebook, DynamoDB, Kafka, Spark, Dremel, Zanzibar, Borg, Dapper, Gorilla and Monarch, and vector databases. Most papers open with my video on the paper, followed by short lessons cut from my class on it.

At the end, there are book chapters to read, on payments, ticket booking, batch processing and more.

I hope you enjoy the course. Cheers.
